Windows 2008 Server, a Mac Mini & XProtect Security Camera Software

Question: What are three different things that are usually not discussed in one blog entry? apple Windows 2008 Server, a Mac Mini & XProtect Security Camera Software

Answer: A Windows 2008 Server, a Mac Mini & XProtect Security Camera software.

Well, those items are never together in the same sentence; till now!!

Now the Apple Mac Mini Server is really being used! Not only is it running our Open Directory and some of our File Sharing services; it’s now, via Fusion, being used to run a copy of Windows 2008 Server. This Windows server is hosting Milestone Systems XProtect Corporate 3.1. XProtect is an IP-based security camera software.

We are also using & supporting this company’s security camera software at some of our clients.

This software connects to our 3 POE (Power Over Ethernet) network cameras. This software allows for live viewing and recording of any action you may want. Any motion detection gets triggered and recorded on the server (specify times to archive content to a backup device). Then an email is sent to whomever with pictures and a nice little movie file showing the actions that triggered the alarm.

Another cool thing is to have a map of your site loaded to the client software, assign cameras to locations, then just hover your mouse over the assigned camera to get a live preview. Or just have the client popup a full screen image of any motion.

This client software is being run very nicely on a 1.5 year old netbook; nothing too powerful needed.

So many different options to try with XProtect. Of course you set TCP and Digital Input/Output Triggers from/to the cameras themselves or from an actual light or alarm buzzer. Soon we’ll be testing facial and license plate recognition with analytic features for counting, auditing purposes.

I’m pretty sure this is the only instance of this kind of Apple, Microsoft, Milestone setup in Lausanne, Switzerland. Maybe in all of Switzerland!?
