Meru Networks continues to make progress we can all be thankful for while connecting to WiFi. Their groundbreaking Virtual Port™ technology, which has been deployed and thoroughly tested by Edifice Communications for over a year now, has recently been approved for a patent (Patent no. 7,826,426). You may ask, what does this mean?
In June of 2010, when Apple was announcing the iPhone 4 at their WWDC conference, over 1000 attendees attempted to join the network causing it to fail. Some called it a micro cell meltdown. An embarrassing moment for many of the parties involved, but an opportunity to think about wireless infrastructure and its robustness related to user volume.
We are seeing an amazing increase in the number of devices available on the market that will primarily connect to a wireless network; smart phones, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, etc. While users are updating their devices at record pace, wireless infrastructure is often forgotten about. Yesterday’s wireless technology won’t be able to handle the needs we have for today’s devices. Meru Networks answers the call with its Virtual Port™ technology.
Meru’s Virtual Port architecture is designed to provide a dedicated virtual network connection for each mobile device, giving users the performance, reliability and security expected from wired networks. In June of 2010, they ran a test named the WLAN 500 Demonstration that showcased their ability to handle large volumes of users demanding large amounts of network traffic. They took over 500 iPhones, iPads, and other wireless devices in a 500 square foot area – streaming voice, video and data concurrently. The demo shows Meru’s ability to provide the service users expect.
As previously posted on our blog, Meru offers a variety of devices and controllers to meet the needs of any enterprise, small or large. This technology is perfect for conference centers, educational institutions, hospitals, offices, hotels, shopping centers, and many more.
